Participate in the RRA Program
Participate in the Program
If you’re importing refrigerant gas or pre-charged equipment with refrigerant into Australia, it’s essential to meet your responsibilities under the Australian Government’s Ozone Protection and Synthetic Greenhouse Gas Management legislation.
Participating in the RRA program ensures you are contributing to industrywide efforts to recover and safely dispose of refrigerants, while streamlining your compliance obligations. Whether you’re a wholesaler or technician, RRA supports best practice across the supply chain, helping Australia meet its international commitments while protecting the environment.
Why Participate?
Working with RRA means you are:
- Meeting legal and environmental responsibilities under national legislation
- Supporting a national approach to refrigerant recovery and stewardship
- Demonstrating credibility as a supplier or technician operating to high standards
- Reducing emissions of ozone-depleting substances and high global warming potential gases
- Sharing the cost of product stewardship across the sector to ensure fairness and equity.
What Products Are Included?
The program applies to:
- Bulk refrigerant gases
- Equipment pre-charged with hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) and Hydrofluoroolefins (HFO’s)
- Products containing synthetic greenhouse gases brought into Australia
To understand which refrigerants are included and how they are classified, refer to the Australian Government’s guide. Please contact Refrigerant Reclaim Australia if you are unsure.
Managing Emerging Refrigerants: HFOs
We support the responsible use of pure Hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs), synthetic refrigerants with a low environmental impact, and encourage their participation in the RRA program to ensure all refrigerants are recovered and disposed of safely. As the market evolves, we advocate for continued industry vigilance and commitment to best practice.
For Technicians
Technicians contribute by recovering refrigerant from systems during service or at the end of life. Additionally, technicians also:
- Return used refrigerant to wholesalers or designated collection points
- Ensure gases are not vented, in line with legal requirements
- Choose to work with RRA-registered wholesalers to support industry compliance
- Play a vital role in environmental stewardship, protecting the ozone layer and supporting a more sustainable future.
If you’re a technician needing to return your recovered refrigerant, you can search for participating wholesalers nationwide to ensure you are working with registered and compliant suppliers.
Looking for a wholesaler?
If you’re a technician needing to source refrigerant, you can search for participating wholesalers nationwide to ensure you are working with registered and compliant suppliers.
For Wholesalers
Wholesalers play a critical role in the program’s success and serve as collection points for recovered refrigerant from technicians.
Additionally, wholesalers:
- Help consolidate gas into RRA provided storage for collection and destruction
- May participate in reclamation efforts, returning high value refrigerant to the market
- Ensure customers have access to a compliant refrigerant supply
By participating, you enable a circular economy approach in the refrigerant industry and help reduce Australia’s environmental footprint.
